Kaunko did, in fact, hear Ami. His unnatural, ungodly brows furrowed over his eyes and he decided that Ami would have to be a test subject for one of his cruel, demonic powers.

The Accusing Stare.

There wasn't anything particularly magical about it, but an accusing stare is bad enough with a human. This was a horse-headed demon in BDSM clothes. He was very good at it.
